1. Functions of Desulfurizing Agents

Target Pollutants: Sulfur oxides such as sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and

sulfur trioxide (So₃).

Application Scenarios: Industries producing sulfur-containing

exhaust gases (e.g., coal-fired power plants, metallurgy,

chemical plants) and treatment of acidic sulfur-containing

wastewater.

Core Functions:

Chemical Absorption: Convert gaseous SO₂ into stable sulfates

or sulfites through acid-base neutralization reactions.

Reduce Acid Rain: Lower sulfur oxide emissions to prevent the

formation of acid rain (H₂SO₄).

Resource Recovery: Reuse byproducts like gypsum

(CaSO₄·2H₂O)

Common Desulfurizing Agents:

Wet Desulfurization: Limestone (CaCO₃), lime (CaO), ammonia

solution (NH₃·H₂O).

Dry/Semi-Dry Desulfurization: Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO₃),

magnesium oxide (MgO).

Wastewater Treatment: Sodium sulfide (Na₂S) for heavy metal

precipitation (e.g., in sulfur-containing wastewater).

2. Functions of Denitrifying Agents

Target Pollutants: Nitrogen oxides (collectively termed Noₓ),

including nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂).

Application Scenarios: Industrial exhaust gas treatment (e.g.,

coal-fired power plants, vehicle emissions, nitric acid

manufacturing).

Core Functions:

Reduction Reaction: Catalytically or non-catalytically reduce

NOₓ into harmless nitrogen gas (N₂) and water (H₂O).

Suppress Photochemical Smog: Reduce NOₓ emissions to

prevent ozone (O₃) and photochemical smog formation.

Synergistic Desulfurization: Certain processes (e.g.,

simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification) can treat both

sulfur and nitrogen pollutants.

Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR): Liquid ammonia (NH₃),

urea (CO(NH₂)₂).

Selective Non-Catalytic Reduction (SNCR): Urea, ammonia

solution (directly injected into high-temperature flue gas).

Wastewater Treatment: Carbon sources (e.g., methanol) for

biological denitrification, converting nitrate (NO₃⁻) to N₂.
